And Nobody Saw
The Exclusives Coming.
Let's get the big one out of the way first. Gears of War: E-Day is an Xbox console exclusive. Not timed. Not "console exclusive at launch." Permanent. Xbox Series X|S and PC only. The PS5 version — which journalist Jeff Grubb confirmed existed right up until the show — was cancelled by new CEO Asha Sharma specifically for this show, as a statement of intent. Her exact words from the stage: "As we return to Xbox, we return to Gears." The internet did not take a breath for approximately forty minutes.
The same treatment was confirmed for Clockwork Revolution — inXile's steampunk time-travel RPG also locked as a permanent Xbox console exclusive. Two major titles, pulled from PS5 at the eleventh hour. If you needed proof that the new Xbox leadership was going to do something differently, that proof arrived before the second trailer rolled.
Beyond the exclusivity bombshell: the showcase delivered. Halo: Campaign Evolved lands July 28 — less than two months away — on Xbox, PC, and PS5. Fable is February 23, 2027 with Hayley Atwell confirmed as the villain Isabel. Spyro: A Realm Beyond is the first original Spyro game in nearly twenty years. Persona 6 was teased. Ninja Theory returned with a third Senua game. Minecraft Dungeons II has a September date. State of Decay 3 showed actual gameplay. CoD: Modern Warfare 4 closed the show. The Series X25 anniversary hardware got announced — a translucent green console paying tribute to the original Xbox design.
PC Gamer's headline called it: "Xbox's immediate future is mostly concerned with the past." Remasters, prequels, remakes. That's fair criticism — but it also describes a company that finally knows which franchises its community actually loves and is delivering them. Whether nostalgia is a strategy or a stopgap is the debate that will run all summer.
The PS5 Version
At The Last Minute.
Here's the timeline. Hours before the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, veteran games journalist Jeff Grubb revealed on Giant Bomb that the PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day — which had been in active development — had been scrapped at the last minute. The PEGI rating board had already classified the game for PlayStation 5 in Europe, which is essentially a paper trail proving the version existed. Then Asha Sharma walked on stage and made it official: Xbox console exclusive. Permanent. Not coming to PS5.
This is the most significant Xbox exclusivity decision since Bethesda's titles were confirmed Xbox-only after the acquisition. It represents a genuine philosophical reversal from the multiplatform strategy that Phil Spencer had been executing for the past three years. Spencer's Xbox put Halo, Forza, even Indiana Jones on PlayStation. Sharma's Xbox is pulling flagship titles back.
The community reaction split almost perfectly along predictable lines. Xbox fans celebrated loudly — this is what they'd been asking for, a reason to own the hardware. PlayStation fans pointed out they'd been sold on a multiplatform future that evaporated overnight. And the neutral observers noted something important: the PS5 version of Gears was real enough that PEGI had already rated it. This wasn't a game that was never coming to PS5 — it was a game that was actively being built for PS5 and then cancelled weeks before the show.
Meanwhile: Halo: Campaign Evolved is still coming to PS5. Fable is still coming to PS5. The new Xbox strategy appears to be selective exclusivity — not blanket multiplatform, not blanket exclusive, but case-by-case decisions designed to keep PS5 as a valuable platform while giving Xbox hardware something to fight for. Whether that selective approach builds the install base Xbox needs is the question 2027 will answer.
"PEGI had already rated Gears E-Day for PS5. The version was real. Asha Sharma cancelled it for a statement. That's not a business decision — that's a declaration."
The E-Day Direct that followed the main showcase delivered everything The Coalition had been promising. This is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, beginning on Emergence Day — the day the Locust Horde first erupted from underground and humanity lost 25% of its population in a single afternoon.
The story begins with Marcus and Dom's relationship fractured — strained by the death of Dom's brother Carlos, who was also Marcus's best friend. The reconciliation of that relationship runs alongside the horror of watching the city of Kalona — the game's primary setting — fall to the Locust in real time. You watch a functioning city become a war zone across the campaign.
Technically: built on UE5 with MegaLights — a groundbreaking lighting system that E-Day is among the first games to ship with. 4K at 60fps for Campaign and Multiplayer. Up to 120fps for Versus modes. The iconic emergence loop for enemy spawning — the Gears cover-combat rhythm — returns fully intact, enhanced with modernised movement and vertical traversal. The chainsaw bayonet is back. New weapons built specifically for close-quarters brutality have been added.
Multiplayer: Horde Siege (PvE co-op) is reimagined. Versus PvP is confirmed with four playable characters, two-player split-screen locally, and a 12-player Foreword Siege defensive mode. Pre-order beta runs August 6–10. October 6 is the launch. Game Pass day one. Xbox and PC only. The game Gears fans have wanted since 2006 is seven months away.
Less than seven weeks from now. July 28, 2026 — with Early Access beginning July 23 for anyone who pre-orders. The full UE5 rebuild of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign arrives on Xbox, PS5, and PC, included with Game Pass on day one.
The new content is called Operation: METEORITE — three new missions featuring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson on a clandestine UNSC operation that ties into the original campaign's lore. This isn't filler — it's lore expansion built specifically for the rebuild. The decision to add content rather than simply remaster is a statement about what kind of project this is. Halo Studios wants this to be a definitive edition, not a nostalgia box.
Standard, Premium, and Collector's Edition options are available for pre-order now. The Collector's Edition is reportedly already selling out at several retailers — the appetite for this one from the original Xbox generation is genuinely enormous. Whether it converts new players on PS5 and tests whether the Halo brand still has cross-platform pull is the secondary story to watch. The primary story is: Master Chief is back, on July 28, and it looks exceptional.
The wait is over — in that we now have a real, specific date. February 23, 2027. Fable lands on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The new showcase trailer struck a notably darker tone than previous previews — less whimsical fairy tale energy, more genuine menace. And the reason for that shift was revealed: the villain.
Hayley Atwell plays Isabel — a former hero of Albion, a pupil of Guildmaster Humphry the Golden, described as a powerful hero driven to darkness. The trailer teased the return of Jack of Blades from the original 2004 Fable — a moment that caused immediate, audible reaction from every viewer who grew up on the original game. The narrative director Craig Owens said of Atwell: "Her desire to dig into the character blew us all away."
Playground Games — who built the Forza Horizon series into arguably the best open-world racing franchise ever made — have had six years to get this right. The community's patience is exhausted but their appetite is undiminished. February 23 is the verdict. The pre-order momentum is already strong. Fable and Persona 4 Revival launch within five days of each other in February 2027 — making it, inexplicably, the most loaded February in gaming history.

"Asha Sharma's first showcase delivered more than Phil Spencer's last three combined. I don't say that to be mean to Phil. I say it because October 6 now exists."
"They cancelled the PS5 version of a game that PEGI had already rated for PS5. The version was real. They built it. They cancelled it for a statement. Respect the conviction even if you hate the decision."
"Fable showing Hayley Atwell as the villain in a noticeably darker trailer AND teasing Jack of Blades returning is Playground Games telling the original fanbase: we have not forgotten who you are. Good."
"Halo: Campaign Evolved in 51 days. Three new missions. Day one on Game Pass. On PS5. The 2001 game that defined a generation of gaming is getting a second chance to do exactly that. I am not emotionally prepared."
"They showed a Persona 6 teaser. A TEASER. Not gameplay. Not a trailer. Just a teaser. And the entire Persona community immediately forgot every other game shown in two hours. Atlus understands parasocial gaming relationships better than any other studio on earth."
"PC Gamer called it 'mostly concerned with the past.' That's fair — remakes, prequels, remasters. But sometimes the past is what people actually want. Sometimes nostalgia IS the product. Xbox 2026 understood the assignment."
"The game Gears fans have wanted since 2006 is seven months away. Xbox and PC only. The wait ends October 6."
- 01 — Pre-order Halo: Campaign Evolved for Early Access July 23. Five days early access for a game this culturally significant is worth it if you were there for the original in 2001. Operation: METEORITE starts the moment you boot up. Get in before the spoilers.
- 02 — Book August 6–10 for the Gears E-Day Open Beta. Pre-order grants early access. Even if you're waiting for the October 6 launch, the beta gives you a real feel for whether the new combat direction works. The Coalition is confident enough to show it early — that's a good sign.
- 03 — If you own a PS5 and want Gears E-Day: the PC version exists. Xbox + PC exclusive means Steam is an option. The game is on PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store. Console exclusive to Xbox does not mean PC exclusive. This matters for a lot of people.
- 04 — Manage February 2027. Persona 4 Revival on February 18 and Fable on February 23 will both demand significant time. Decide now which one you're playing first. Playing both simultaneously is how backlogs become identities.
- 05 — Best post-Xbox lobby debate for this week: "If you could only play ONE Xbox showcase game between now and the end of 2026, what is it — and would you buy it or wait for Game Pass?" The answer reveals everything about someone's Xbox relationship in a single choice.
