The Internet Collapsed on Cue.
If you thought Sony was going to ease into Summer Game Fest week with something tidy and predictable, you clearly underestimated the team at PlayStation. The June 2 State of Play opened with Marvel's Wolverine, closed with the reveal of an entirely new God of War game, and stuffed everything in between with release dates, sequels, and surprises.
The show ran at Alamo Drafthouse theatres across the US with a live audience — Sony's first time doing that since E3 2018. The fact that they rented actual cinema space told you everything about how confident they were. The content backed it up.
Rapid-fire highlights: Control Resonant confirmed September 24. Onimusha: Way of the Sword locked in. Silent Hill: Downfall dated. Phantom Blade Zero given a window. Runescape: Dragonwilds hitting PS+ on day one. PlayStation Classics expanding. And then, with twenty minutes left to go, Santa Monica Studio walked out and showed us the next God of War.
Except it's not Kratos. Not Atreus. It's Faye. And the internet absolutely lost it.
Sony Santa Monica's next mainline God of War follows Faye (Laufey) — Kratos' wife, Atreus' mother — through the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods. After her death at the start of 2018's God of War, she discovers the plans she put in place to protect her family are now under threat. So she fights her way back. As a giant. With a sword and powerful giant magic. And apparently, a talking cube sidekick.
Faye is played by Deborah Ann Woll. The gameplay segment ran nearly 20 minutes — enemies get launched, sliced, and blasted with acrobatic ease. The combat looks faster and more magic-heavy than Kratos'. The setting? A land overflowing with divine power, mythology, and death. So: standard God of War Tuesday.
No release date yet. The reveal alone is the statement. But given Santa Monica's pace, 2027 or 2028 seems most likely. Start your theories now. Debate whether it's "really" God of War without Kratos. The discourse is already at maximum heat.
Insomniac opened the State of Play with a sustained look at Logan's brutal, R-rated single-player adventure. The X-Men don't exist yet. Logan is hunting mutants captured and sold by the Reavers — a cybernetic militia. He meets Jean Grey along the way. The combat is violent, fast, and satisfying in a way that makes you immediately understand why this team was chosen for this character.
The universe: creative director Marcus Smith confirmed this is a standalone story — not directly connected to Spider-Man's continuity but set in the broader Insomniac Marvel universe. Cameo potential? Very high. Character-specific rage mechanics using the berserker system look genuinely different from anything in the Spider-Man games.
September 15 is the date. PS5 exclusive. The Insomniac assembly line has not missed yet. Expectations are high. Logan has not had a great gaming track record historically — but this looks like the game that changes that completely.
Phil Spencer stepped down in February 2026. After years steering the Xbox ship through the Activision acquisition, Game Pass expansion, and multiplatform strategy, Spencer is out. New CEO Asha Sharma has wasted no time — Game Pass prices lowered, Achievements system overhauled, new Xbox boot-up sound. Whether that signals a deeper cultural shift at Microsoft Gaming, we're about to find out on June 7.
What's confirmed or strongly expected on June 7:
- ▸Gears of War: E-Day — prequel to the original trilogy. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago on Emergence Day. Locust horror is reportedly back in full force. The Coalition + People Can Fly. The dedicated E-Day Direct follows the main show.
- ▸Fable — the long-awaited reboot from Playground Games. Delayed out of 2025. Time to deliver. The pressure is enormous and the community's patience is finite.
- ▸Halo: Combat Evolved Remake — Phil Spencer's cryptic "return of a classic that's been with us since the beginning" has exactly one candidate. The Halo community is vibrating.
- ▸Forza Horizon 6 — already out and already winning. Tokyo map confirmed as the series' best yet. Expect a spotlight slot to celebrate the launch.
This is Xbox's first major showcase under entirely new leadership. The games are real — Fable, Halo CE, Gears E-Day, and Forza all in the same year is a genuinely impressive lineup for Xbox's 25th anniversary. Whether the new team's presentation matches the content is the question SGF June 7 will answer.
"God of War Laufey is either the best decision Sony Santa Monica has ever made or a $400M experiment in brand courage. Either way I'm day one."
"Phil Spencer leaving Xbox is the most consequential gaming industry event of 2026 and we're all glossing over it because there are too many other things happening."
"Wolverine looks like it could be Insomniac's most violent game ever and I mean that as the highest possible compliment for this character specifically."
"Until Dawn 2 but it's ghost hunters on a tropical island is the most 'we listened to what made the first one work' sequel pitch I've ever heard. I'm in."
"Nobody is going to release anything between September and November because GTA VI is a black hole that consumes all attention in a 90-day radius."
"Sony opened with Wolverine, closed with God of War Laufey, and somehow that wasn't even the story. The story was everything in between."
You've got GG and OP down. Here's the next tier — the vocabulary that separates the regulars from the veterans.
- 01 —Don't pre-order based on a CGI trailer. Beautiful cutscenes have been lying to us since 2005. Wait for actual gameplay footage. Your wallet will thank you by September.
- 02 —Use a watchlist, not live reactions. If you can't watch SGF live, a curated "everything announced" article from IGN or Eurogamer 3 hours after the show gives you more signal than 2 hours of breathless streaming.
- 03 —The "release window" trap. "2026 window" means anything from July to literally December 31. Treat it as announced, not imminent, until you see a specific month attached.
- 04 —Check Xbox Game Pass first, always. With Asha Sharma lowering prices and the lineup growing, there's a real chance that game you're eyeing is day-one on Game Pass. Check before you buy.
- 05 —Day of the Devs is always worth watching. Every year there's a sleeper indie from that showcase that ends up being one of the year's best games. Pay attention to it even after the big-budget shows.
Drop these in your Discord tonight. Watch the chaos begin.
- 🎮"God of War without Kratos — bold creative move or brand suicide?" Genuine split opinion. Both sides have valid points. Neither side will admit it. Perfect lobby debate.
- 🔥"What game announced this week do you think quietly becomes the best one nobody expected?" This always produces the best predictions. Somebody always says the weird one that turns out to be correct.
- 🤔"Is Halo: CE Remake going to hit different now that the original generation has nostalgia for it, OR is it just going to expose how much gaming has changed?" Generational discourse. Absolute carnage in a good way.
- 💭"Phil Spencer out. Asha Sharma in. Does the new Xbox energy actually change anything for you as a player?" Surprisingly nuanced discussion every time this comes up. People have thoughts.
