And somewhere in the fine print of all those agreements you didn't read, you handed over something far more valuable than your email address. Here's what's actually been taken — and why it matters more for some communities than others.

There is a document you have agreed to approximately four hundred times in your life. It is several thousand words long. It is written in a font size specifically chosen to discourage reading. It contains clauses that, if explained to you in plain English by a friend over coffee, would make you put your coffee down and say something unrepeatable.

You have never read it. Nobody has ever read it. It is possible that the lawyers who wrote it have not fully read it. And yet there it sits — the Terms of Service agreement — forming the legal foundation of a relationship between you and an enormous corporation that knows more about your daily life, your preferences, your fears, your desires, and your 3am habits than your closest friends do.

You clicked agree. You got the app. You got on with your day. And the data collection began, or continued, or intensified — depending on which of the four hundred agreements we're talking about — in the background, continuously, generating a profile of you that is more detailed, more accurate, and more commercially valuable than you have probably allowed yourself to fully reckon with.

This is not a conspiracy theory. This is the documented, publicly acknowledged, occasionally testified-about-in-Congress business model of the most valuable companies in human history. The conspiracy, if there is one, is entirely in plain sight. We just agreed to it without reading the terms.

What They Actually Know About You

Let's be specific, because the abstract is easy to dismiss and the specific is considerably harder to be comfortable with.

Your phone knows where you sleep, because it has been in your bedroom every night for years and the GPS data is continuous. It knows where you work, where you worship, where you seek medical treatment, who you visit regularly, and which routes you take between all of these places. It knows this not approximately but precisely — to the metre, timestamped, logged, and stored.

Your search history is a document of your innermost preoccupations. Not the things you'd tell a therapist — the things you'd tell no one. The symptoms you looked up at 2am that you haven't mentioned to a doctor. The questions about your relationship you couldn't ask out loud. The financial situation you're embarrassed about. The things you wanted to know but didn't want anyone to know you wanted to know. That document exists. It is not private. It has been read, catalogued, and converted into targeting parameters by systems that do not care about your dignity.

Your social graph — who you know, how close you are to them, the nature of your connections — is mapped in extraordinary detail. The platform knows, from the pattern of your interactions, which relationships are deepening and which are fading, which connections are romantic and which are professional, which people in your network are financially stressed and which are planning major purchases. It knows things about your relationships that you may not have consciously articulated to yourself.

Your search history is a document of your innermost preoccupations. That document exists. It has been read. It has been sold.

And your emotional state — the rhythm of your engagement, what you linger on, what you scroll past, what you return to, how your usage patterns shift on different days and in different contexts — this too is being read. Not perfectly, not with full comprehension of what it means. But with enough accuracy to make predictions about your behaviour that are, statistically, uncomfortably reliable.

This is not science fiction. This is the infrastructure of the free internet. And it is free in the same way that a casino is free to enter — the business model requires your continued engagement and is specifically designed to extract maximum value from you while you're inside.

Why This Hits Different For Some Communities

Here is the part of the digital privacy conversation that the mainstream tech press chronically underdiscusses, because the mainstream tech press is largely written by and for people to whom surveillance has historically been an abstract concern rather than a lived one.

The relationship between surveillance technology and Black and Brown communities in America is not abstract. It is not theoretical. It is documented history with living victims and ongoing consequences.

COINTELPRO — the FBI's programme of systematic surveillance, infiltration, and disruption of civil rights organisations from the 1950s through the 1970s — specifically targeted Black leadership and Black political organising. The tools available then were wiretaps, informants, and intercepted mail. The programme caused documented, serious harm to real people and real movements. It was not a paranoid fantasy. It was official government policy, eventually revealed and acknowledged.

The tools available now are incomparably more powerful. Facial recognition technology — which has documented higher error rates for darker-skinned faces, meaning it more frequently misidentifies Black people as criminals — is being deployed by law enforcement in cities across America, often without public notification or meaningful oversight. Predictive policing algorithms, trained on historical arrest data that reflects decades of racially biased policing, generate predictions that systematically over-police the same communities that have already been over-policed. The automation does not remove the bias. It launders it. It gives it a veneer of objectivity while locking it in at scale.

Social media surveillance of activist communities is not hypothetical — it is documented. Black Lives Matter organisers have had their accounts monitored, their posts used as evidence, their networks mapped by law enforcement using the same platforms they use to communicate and organise. The free tool of community building is also, simultaneously, the surveillance infrastructure of the state.

This is not a reason to abandon digital space — that space is too important, too useful, too central to contemporary life and organising and culture to surrender. It is a reason to enter it with clear eyes about what it is and what it costs, particularly if you are someone whose community has historical and ongoing reasons to be cautious about who is watching and why.

The "Nothing to Hide" Argument and Why It's Nonsense

At this point in any privacy conversation, someone — probably someone with a very confident energy and a slightly smug expression — will produce the argument: if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear.

This argument is so thoroughly, so completely, so multi-dimensionally wrong that it is difficult to know where to begin dismantling it. But let's try.

First: everyone has things they prefer to keep private that are not evidence of wrongdoing. Medical conditions. Financial struggles. Family difficulties. Political views in contexts where those views could have professional consequences. Romantic situations that are nobody else's business. The desire for privacy is not guilt. It is a fundamental component of human dignity. The right to a private self — a self that exists apart from and not fully visible to institutions, employers, governments, and strangers — is not a criminal's refuge. It is the basic condition of a free person.

Second: the question of what constitutes "something to hide" is not fixed. It changes with political context, with who is in power, with what the law decides to criminalise. Organising for civil rights was, at various points in American history, treated as something to hide by the government. Being LGBTQ+ was something to hide — legally and socially — within living memory in most of the world. The assumption that the current definition of acceptable is permanent and the current government is trustworthy with unlimited surveillance power is historically illiterate in a way that should make anyone who has paid attention to history genuinely uncomfortable.

Third: the argument assumes the surveillance is accurate. It is not always accurate. Facial recognition misidentifies. Algorithms produce false positives. Data gets hacked, leaked, stolen, or misapplied. The person with nothing to hide who is nevertheless misidentified by a flawed system and targeted accordingly has very much to fear — and has discovered, too late, that the "nothing to hide" argument offered them no actual protection.

What Encryption, Awareness and the Culture of Privacy Actually Look Like

We are not going to tell you to live off-grid. We are not going to tell you to use a burner phone wrapped in tinfoil and conduct all communications through hand-written notes delivered by trusted pigeons. That lifestyle has its own problems and also the pigeons are unreliable.

What we are going to suggest is a graduated, practical awareness. Not paranoia — awareness. The difference being that paranoia is undirected fear, and awareness is understanding specifically what is happening and making informed decisions about it.

Know what you're trading. Every free platform has a cost. The cost is your data, your attention, and your behavioural patterns. That is not always an unreasonable trade — these platforms provide real value. But it should be a conscious trade, made with understanding, rather than an unconscious one made by clicking agree without reading.

Use encryption where it matters. Signal for sensitive conversations. Not because you are doing anything wrong, but because you have the right to a private conversation and the technology to protect it exists and is free and easy to use. Privacy is not a luxury for people with something to hide. It is a right, and exercising rights is how they remain rights.

Be thoughtful about what you post publicly. Not paralysed — thoughtful. The internet is permanent in ways that feel abstract until they aren't. The post that seemed harmless in 2019 exists in 2025. The location data from the photo you didn't strip the metadata from tells a story you didn't intend to tell. The pattern of your public life, assembled from your public posts, is more legible to sophisticated systems than it looks to you.

Privacy is not a luxury for people with something to hide. It is a right. And exercising rights is how they remain rights.

Support policy that protects everyone. Individual behaviour change helps individual people. Structural change protects communities. Data protection legislation, facial recognition moratoriums, algorithmic accountability requirements, community oversight of surveillance technology — these are not niche tech-policy issues. They are civil liberties issues. They are community safety issues. They are, for the communities that have the most historical reason to distrust surveillance, survival issues.

The Culture That's Always Known It Was Being Watched

There is something both painful and quietly powerful about the fact that hip-hop culture — which has been subject to surveillance, to profiling, to the assumption of criminality, to the monitoring of its artists and activists and communities since its inception — has continued to create, to organise, to build, to speak truth to power, and to do all of it with a full awareness that someone is almost certainly watching.

The culture did not stop because it was surveilled. It did not go quiet because powerful institutions found its message inconvenient. It found ways to communicate that were layered, coded, communal — that operated on multiple levels simultaneously, so that the surface reading and the deeper reading existed in the same space. The tradition of signifying. The tradition of speaking to your community in a language that outsiders hear but don't fully understand. This is not just a stylistic choice. It is a survival strategy with deep historical roots.

The digital age has created new versions of old threats — more powerful, more pervasive, harder to see and harder to avoid. But it has also created new tools for connection, for organising, for building community across distances that would have been unbridgeable before. The question, as it has always been, is how to use the tools available without being used by them.

Big Brother got a glow-up. The technology is better, the reach is wider, the data is deeper. But the human impulse to speak, to create, to organise, to build, to refuse to be made invisible — that has not been upgraded out of existence either.

It never will be.
